Large scale retinal modeling for the design of new generation retinal prostheses

    Get PDF
With the help of modern technology, blindness caused by retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration or retinitis pigmentosa is now considered reversible. Scientists from various fields such as Neuroscience, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Bioscience have been collaborating to design and develop retinal prostheses, with the aim of replacing malfunctioning parts of the retina and restoring vision in the blind. Human trials conducted to test retinal prostheses have yielded encouraging results, showing the potential of this approach in vision recovery. However, a retinal prosthesis has several limitations with regard to its hardware and biological functions, and several attempts have been made to overcome these limitations. This thesis focuses on the biological aspects of retinal prostheses: the biological processes occurring inside the retina and the limitations of retinal prostheses corresponding to those processes have been analysed. Based on these analyses, three major findings regarding information processing inside the retina have been presented and these findings have been used to conceptualise retinal prostheses that have the characteristics of asymmetrical and separate pathway stimulations. In the future, when nanotechnology gains more popularity and is completely integrated inside the prosthesis, this concept can be utilized to restore useful visual information such as colour, depth, and contrast to achieve high-quality vision in the blind

Factors Affecting the Success of PPP Transport Projects in Vietnam

    Get PDF
Transport infrastructure plays an important role in the development of each country, especially for developing countries like Vietnam. To promote the development of transport infrastructure as well as to deal with some challenges such as budget and project efficiency, the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model is a very proper choice. The factors that determine the success of PPP transport projects are important issues to be analyzed in different countries. The article aims at identifying the factors and the extent of their influence on the success of PPP transport project in Vietnam. Research data are collected from surveys with questionnaire to capture related partners' perceptions of success factors. The influence level of the factors is assessed on a 5-point Likert scale (from 1 - very low to 5 - very high). A total of 92 questionnaires were collected and analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software to rank the influence of success factors. Research results show that “Adequate and transparent legal framework”, “State and private commitments and responsibilities”, “Transparency in bidding”, “State support policy” and “Good governance” are the top five factors determining the success of a PPP transport project in Vietnam. The new findings of the study help the State and investors better understand the factors determining the success of PPP transport projects in Vietnam in order to make appropriate decisions on policies

Child Sexual Exploitation Investigation in Vietnam and Recommendations

    Get PDF
Child sexual exploitation has been a serious trouble in Vietnam for a long time. Since 2014, the law enforcement instituted about 1,200 to 1,900 cases annually. Statistics show about 2,000 children are victims of child sexual exploitation crime every year, in which girls account for approximately 80%. A worrying trend is there are more and more children under 6 years old become victims. Thanks to recent efforts from the government and other stakeholders, the situation of this crime has been improvd effectively. In the coming years, all stakeholders need to adopt several measures for preventing and suppressing this type of crime. This paper presents some main problem, giving causes and effects, the recommendation and solution of issue. If these solutions could be applied, they will help to deal with child sexual more feasible; therefore, raising and minimizing this type of violation in Vietnam in the coming time

Faithiful Embeddings for EL++ Knowledge Bases

Recently, increasing efforts are put into learning continual representations for symbolic knowledge bases (KBs). However, these approaches either only embed the data-level knowledge (ABox) or suffer from inherent limitations when dealing with concept-level knowledge (TBox), i.e., they cannot faithfully model the logical structure present in the KBs. We present BoxEL, a geometric KB embedding approach that allows for better capturing the logical structure (i.e., ABox and TBox axioms) in the description logic EL++. BoxEL models concepts in a KB as axis-parallel boxes that are suitable for modeling concept intersection, entities as points inside boxes, and relations between concepts/entities as affine transformations. We show theoretical guarantees (soundness) of BoxEL for preserving logical structure. Namely, the learned model of BoxEL embedding with loss 0 is a (logical) model of the KB. Experimental results on (plausible) subsumption reasonings and a real-world application for protein-protein prediction show that BoxEL outperforms traditional knowledge graph embedding methods as well as state-of-the-art EL++ embedding approaches.Comment: Published in ISWC'2

Combining Inductive and Deductive Reasoning for Query Answering over Incomplete Knowledge Graphs

Current methods for embedding-based query answering over incomplete Knowledge Graphs (KGs) only focus on inductive reasoning, i.e., predicting answers by learning patterns from the data, and lack the complementary ability to do deductive reasoning, which requires the application of domain knowledge to infer further information. To address this shortcoming, we investigate the problem of incorporating ontologies into embedding-based query answering models by defining the task of embedding-based ontology-mediated query answering. We propose various integration strategies into prominent representatives of embedding models that involve (1) different ontology-driven data augmentation techniques and (2) adaptation of the loss function to enforce the ontology axioms. We design novel benchmarks for the considered task based on the LUBM and the NELL KGs and evaluate our methods on them. The achieved improvements in the setting that requires both inductive and deductive reasoning are from 20% to 55% in HITS@3

The kinetics of lignin methylsulfonation were studied in solution by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques under an isothermal program, at 55, 65, 75 and 85°C, respectively. It was found that activation energy, Eα =  41.26 kJ/mol, and preexponential factor A was 1.85×103 s-1

Impact of eco-innovation and sustainable tourism growth on the environmental degradation: the case of China

    Get PDF
Climate complexities and global warming have made sustainable development a customary topic in environmental literature. Since then, various diggings have been happening in academia. Amongst them tourism and eco-innovation receives the heap due to its contribution to economic development. The study, thereby, examines the impact of tourism, economic growth and eco-innovation on environmental degradation in China. The secondary data has been extracted from World Development Indicators (WDI) database from 1988 to 2020. The nexus among the variables have been examined using Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lagged (NARDL) model. Findings reveal that international tourism receipts, expenditures and number of tourist arrival, GDP, national income and inflation are positively correlated with environmental degradation, while sustainability- oriented eco-innovation is related negatively in case of China. This study has provided help to the regulators while developing new policies regarding environmental degradation by controlling emissions from economic and tourism development and using sustainability- oriented eco-innovation
